Glazing industry bucks trend

by News Editor - 16/02/2011

"With latest figures showing unemployment has risen to 2.5 million and construction redundancies rising 28%, the glazing industry is witnessing a growing number of job vacancies."

LONDON, FEB 2011: The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has recently released its unemployment figures and they make for grim reading. In the three months to the end of December 2010 UK unemployment rose by 44,000 is a headline figure of 2.5 million. Of greater concern is the growing number of younger citizens out of work. Currently youth unemployment is running at 20.5%.

The construction industry is not escaping from the latest countrywide trend. Information from the ONS pinpoints an increase in construction redundancies from 18,000 to 23,000 for the three months to December 2010. However opportunities do exist in the construction sector, notably in the glazing segment, says Gemma Sunderland, Managing Director of glazing industry web portal www.jobs4glazing.com.

Gemma and the team at www.jobs4glazing.com have had an interesting start to 2011 and have see the number of vacancies rise on the same period last year. Gemma explained: "When we returned from the Christmas break we opened the doors to a influx of new companies registering vacancies. We currently have clients looking for field service engineers, installation managers, sales managers, window & door estimators and a production managers. The other interesting growth area of vacancies is that of sales. It is in this area that many companies are looking to recruit younger workers. With unemployment running at 20.5% amongst the young, we are encouraging younger adults to consider working in the glazing sector."

For recruiting companies, www.jobs4glazing.com also reported another interesting trend. Over the Christmas period and early into the new year the number of candidates registering with the website increases. A sure sign that employment is firmly in the minds of people.
